How to Treat and Prevent Cloudy Water
WHAT IS IT?
Cloudy water is a hazy, murky appearance that is caused by impurities introduced by the environment, bathers and source water, or it could be a chemical imbalance causing the cloudy water conditions.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
- Incorrect pH level
- Insufficient chlorine
- Excess contaminants
- Filtration/circulation problem
HOW TO TREAT CLOUDY WATER
1. Test and Balance Water
Always begin by testing your pool water. Your test results will tell you if your water parameters are unbalanced.

- Your pH must be between 7.2 and 7.6., Correct if necessary
- Pay special attention to your Free Chlorine level. Low Free Chlorine can cause cloudy pool water due to excess organic contaminants. Always maintain Free Chlorine between 1 -4 pp
2. Clean Filter and Pool Surfaces
Your pool filter removes dirt and debris that naturally enter your pool water from the environment and swimmers. When your pool filter is dirty, it can’t effectively filter smaller particles that may cause cloudy water.
Backwash or chemically clean your filter with PoolBrite Filter Cleaner to dissolve the oils, scale, and organic biofilms and restore filter efficiency.
Properly clean your pool surfaces. Skim the water surface, brush walls, vacuum, remove any visual debris, and empty skimmer baskets.
Allow your pump and filter to operate continuously for at least 24 hours, and filter all the pool water.
3. Apply a Water Clarifier
If your pool water is balanced, your filter is clean, and you are still experiencing cloudy water, you may need to treat your pool with a water clarifier or flocculant. Pool water clarifiers and flocculants aid water filtration by binding together microscopic particles that are too small to be removed and making them easier to remove.
Clarifiers act like a “magnet,” clumping tiny particles together so the filter can catch them. Use 2 x Brite-Blu Clarifier Tablet or 50ml Water Clarifier per 10 000L. Run the pump and filter for 24 hours, then backwash and rinse the filter. Repeat if necessary.
Flocculants allow the heavier material to sink to the floor to be vacuumed out of the pool. Use 150g PoolBrite Alum Powder per 10 000 L. Broadcast the product across the pool surface or mix it in a bucket of water and add it to the pool with the multiport valve set to Circulate/Bypass. Run the pump for 2 hours, then turn the pump OFF for 12–24 hours. The “cloud” will settle on the floor, and you must manually vacuum to Waste (not through the filter).
4. Apply a Shock Treatment
Shocking your pool water removes any lingering contaminants and helps to further aid filtration. Apply a pool shock weekly as part of your regular maintenance routine, after pool parties, and major rainstorms. Add 100g Month Mate Granular Xtra Blue per 10,000L or 1 Bag Month Mate Shock Xtra Blue per 50,000L.
HOW TO PREVENT CLOUDY WATER
- Add 1 Brite-Blu Clarifier Tablet or 50ml Water Clarifier per 10 000L to your pool water as part of your weekly maintenance routine to improve clarity and reduce contaminant levels.
- Backwash and rinse the filter when necessary, usually once a week
- Chemically clean the filter at least twice a year, at the start of the swimming season and then again before winter starts.
- Run the pump at least 8-10 hours per day in summer and 6-8 hours in winter.
- Maintain proper water balance, test and adjust pH weekly and Total Alkalinity as needed.
- Maintain ideal chlorine levels (1 -3 ppm) apply a Month Mate Super Plus floater
- Shock routinely, apply Month Mate Shock Xtra Blue, 1 bag per 50 000L once a week.
